This early April morning was greeted by a serious accident between a Truck and a Taxi. The incident occurred on the N3 Northbound between Balgowen and Lions River.
It is believed that the taxi had suffered mechanical problems, and was at a standstill on the side of the highway. Of the eleven occupants of the taxi, some were still seated inside the vehicle, while others were standing and sitting around outside the vehicle. A horse and trailer truck, carrying bags of polystyrene balls, then allegedly side swiped the taxi.
The ER24 paramedics on the scene, described the taxi to look like a tin can that had been ripped open.
After the collision, the truck lost control, careered off the side of the road, and down an approximate 60 meter embankment, coming to rest on its roof. Heavy rescuers, as well as the Jaws of Life, were used in a two hour long operation to free the critically injured truck driver.
Occupants of the taxi all sustained serious injuries; one was fatally injured, two in a critical condition with head injuries and multiple bone fractures, and another eight were in a serious condition with multiple injuries.
After initial stabilisation by paramedics on scene, all patients were transported by ambulance to nearby appropriate medical facilities for further treatment.
The appropriate investigations will be made into the cause of the collision, SAPS and Metro Police were on scene to assist.
