Two Children Knocked Down On Pedestrian Crossing

A mother and her two children aged two and four were crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing when they were struck by a bakkie. The family of four are believed to be foreigners, where the father is on an exchange in South Africa teaching English.

The incident occurred on DF Malan Road in Sasolburg, when a bakkie failed to stop at the pedestrian crossing. According to bystanders, the other cars had come to a halt to allow the family to cross, when the bakkie overtook the stationery vehicles crashing into the children.

The two year old was in a pram at the time of the incident, causing the pram to overturn. Fortunately the baby only sustained minor injuries. The four year old girl sustained a possible head injury and a broken leg. She was stabilised on scene by ER24 Advanced Life Support paramedics before she was airlifted by the ER24 Discovery Medicopter to a Johannesburg hospital for further treatment.

Neither the girls' mother, nor the driver of the bakkie sustained any physical injuries. Traffic police, Fire and Rescue, and the Sasolburg SAPS were on scene.
