Pietermaritzburg – Cedara.

A 19yr old boy has drowned at a swimming pool at a local Collage in Cedara this afternoon.

ER24 and SAPS Search and Rescue from Pietermaritzburg were called to the scene to help assist in a drowning. Once on scene, they were notified by EMRS that a 19yr boy had drowned but they were unable to locate his body in the pool as it was complete discolored.

The body was found within minutes of the rescue teaming going into the water.

It is believed that members of public climbed the fence to go for a swim, the young man climbed onto the diving platform and jumped into the pool, it’s unclear what transpired afterwards.

SAPS will be investigating the drowning.

Pietermaritzburg ( Elanskop ) Edendale Road

One person is dead, two are critical and another two are in a serious condition after a head on collision this evening between a taxi and a light motor vehicle occurred on Edendale road near Elandskop.

ER24 and EMRS arrived on the scene to find both vehicles in the middle of the road. The driver of the light motor vehicle was entrapped but unfortunately had already died before emergency personnel had arrived on the scene. The two patients that were critical were from the car. They had suffered traumatic injuries and Advanced Life Support intervention had to be performed before they were transported to Edendale hospital. The two patients that were in a serious condition came from the taxi were stabilised on scene and transported by EMRS also to Edendale Hospital for further medical treatment.

It is unclear who was at fault but the sudden down poor of rain may have been the cause of this accident due to poor visibility. The necessary authorities were on scene and will be investigating the accident.

Pietermaritzburg ( Central ) Intersection of West and Loop Street

Three people have been injured this afternoon after a collision involving two light motor vehicles and a taxi.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find all three vehicles in middle of the road. Two patients were treated for serious injuries of which one of them was a 8 month pregnant woman. A third person was treated for minor to moderate injuries. The patients were stabilised on scene and transported to Edendale Hospital and Pietermaritzburg Medi-Clinic for further medical treatment.

It is unclear who was at fault but the necessary authorities will be investigating the accident.

Kokstad ( N2 ) 28km outside Kokstad


Kokstad ( N2 ) 28km outside Kokstad

One person is dead and another person has sustained serious injuries after a head on collision this afternoon on the N2, 28km outside Kokstad in the direction of Port Shepstone.

ER24 service provider ResQmed were amongst the first to arrive on the scene. They found two light motor vehicles in the middle of the road. Once they approached the first vehicle they found a female driver who is believed to be in her early thirty’s was entrapped and had suffered severe fatal injuries. She was declared deceased on the scene by emergency personnel. Jaws Of Life had to be used to extricate the deceased from the vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle also a female was in a serious condition. She had suffered possible neck and back injuries. She was stabilised and transported to Kokstad provincial for further medical treatment.

It is believed that misty and rainy conditions may have been the cause of this collision but the necessary authorities were on scene and a full investigation will be done into the accident.

Cape Town [Firgrove] R102 on 30 January 2010 at 06h35

A lady died after the Nissan Sentra she was driving collided into the side of a Mercedes Sprinter, at the intersection of the R102 and Macassar Road, in Firgrove.

There were numerous occupants in the sprinter but nine were taken to Vergelegen Medi-Clinic by ER24 and Metro EMS ambulances. One patient sustained serious injuries and the remaining patients sustained minor to moderate injuries. The deceased lady is believed to be the only occupant of the Sentra.

The SAPS and Traffic Dept were also in attendance.

Two incidents involving taxis - 29 January 2010

The first incident happened at the intersection of Modderdam Road and Belrail Road in Bellville at around 15h00.

Six people were injured when the taxi they were travelling in overturned. The patients sustained minor to moderate injuries. It is believed that a tyre burst on the vehicle which caused it to overturn.


The second incident occurred at the intersection of Racecourse Road and Chukker Road in Lansdowne at around 17h20.

Eighteen people sustained minor to moderate injuries when a taxi and BMW collided. It is alleged that the taxi collided into the side of the BMW.

Cape Town [Rondebosch] Muir Road on 29 January 2010 at 05h10

A police officer and armed response officer were shot near the corners of Muir and Coniston roads in Rondebosch.

The police officer and armed response officer both sustained gunshot wounds but were in a stable condition. They were transported to N1 City Hospital and Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital respectively for further medical care.

The circumstances around the incident were unclear but it is believed that they were chasing a house-breaking suspect when the shooting occurred.

Cape Town [Du Noon] on 28 January 2010 at 14h35

A nineteen-year-old boy was stabbed multiple times outside the secondary school he is believed to be attending in Du Noon.

The boy was in a critical condition on arrival of paramedics and his condition deteriorated shortly after their arrival. The patient went into cardiac arrest and the paramedics started an advanced life support resuscitation.

Unfortunately the resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and the boy was declared dead on the scene.

The motive for the stabbing was not known by paramedics on the scene but police are investigating the matter.

Cape Town [Melkbosstrand] R27 on 27 January 2010 at 18h10

Two people died and eighteen others were taken to hospital when a bus and a VW Jetta collided on the West Coast Road (R27) in Melkbos.

The two occupants of the Jetta were dead on arrival of emergency services and needed to be cut from the mangled car. Eighteen people from the bus were taken to various hospitals for further treatment. One patient sustained serious injuries and the other seventeen patients sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The remaining occupants of the bus were transported from the scene in another bus.

The road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked on the scene. Police are investigating the collision.

Cape Town [Kraaifontein] Brighton Road on 25 January 2010 at 11h35

Fourteen people were injured when a bakkie and a taxi collided at the intersection of Brighton Road and Darwin Road in Kraaifontein. The taxi overturned as a result of the collision.

One patient was trapped under the taxi and another patient was trapped inside the taxi, they were extricated by rescue crews from the Fire Department. Two of the fourteen patients sustained serious injuries and the remaining patients sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The patients were taken to various surrounding hospitals for further treatment. A section of Brighton Road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked on scene.

Cape Town [Brackenfell] R300 on 25 January 2010 at 15h55

Seven people were injured when a bakkie overturned on the R300, in the direction of the N2, just before the Kuilsriver turn-off.

When paramedics arrived on the scene they found the bakkie lying on its side in a grassy area next to the freeway. Some of the patients had been ejected from the back of the bakkie and were found lying around the vehicle.

The patients sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to hospital for further treatment. The occupants of the bakkie are believed to have been off duty workers. The cause of the incident is unknown.

Cape Town [Delft] R300 on 23 January 2010 at 18h20


One person died and four others were injured when a vehicle rolled on the R300, at the Stellenbosch Arterial off-ramp, in the direction of the N1.

A male patient was dead on arrival of emergency services, two people sustained serious injuries and two others sustained moderate injuries.

Some occupants of the vehicle appeared to have been ejected from the vehicle when it overturned, with one of the patients being found approximately sixty metres from the car.

Police are investigating the incident.
