Motorbiker Airlifted by Medicopter

A 33 year old man was left in a critical condition this morning after his motorbike and a bakkie collided on Bergbron and Andes Roads in Bergbron, Roodepoort.

Shortly after 12:25 paramedics received a distress call from members of the public to report the serious incident.

Paramedics that arrived on the scene found the man lying between the bakkie and his motorbike. On further assessment, paramedics found that the man sustained multiple injuries and had to evacuated to a hospital as soon as possible for further medical treatment.
The Medicopter was called to the scene with specialised equipment to assist with the stabilisation of the critically injured man before airlifting him to a hospital in Johannesburg.

Family members on the scene were severely traumatised by the incident.

It is understood from bystanders on the scene that the man was knocked off his bike and thrown several meters before landing in the middle of the intersection.

Gordon and Bergbron Roads were closed for several minutes whilst the Medicopter landed on the site. Motorists and members of the community flocked to the site to see why the traffic was backed up.

It is not clear at this stage what caused the accident. The Johannesburg Metro Police Department attended the scene and will conduct an investigation.

Accident Leaves Man Severely Entrapped in His Vehicle

The accident between two bakkies and a one ton truck left the driver of one of the bakkies severely entrapped in his vehicle.

The accident occurred at around 07h30 this morning on Handicap Road in Ruimsig, West of Johannesburg. The cause of the accident is not known, but ER24 paramedics on the scene explained that the bakkie that the fourty year old man was travelling in was almost unrecognisable due to the damage. The entire dashboard and steering column was covering the man's lower body, and his legs were entrapped. On first assessment it was noted that he had sustained a severe break to his right arm, and it was stabilised using a splint.

Roodepoort Fire and Rescue Services were on the scene to provide stabilisation to the damaged vehicle, and they needed to use the Jaws of Life to cut away at the wreck to try and free the man. During the ninety minute grueling task of extrication, where Rescue services had to carefully cut at the vehicle, paramedics were stabilising the man, providing him with comforting support, protecting him from possible further injury as the vehicle was cut, and supplying him with the necessary pain medication. The ER24 Discovery Medicopter was also activated to airlift the patient once he had been removed. Paramedics treating the man explained that the he was in a curious state of calm throughout the entire process, and only cried out in pain upon movement or pressure on his legs.

Once the wreck was removed, it was possible for paramedics to assess the damage that he had sustained to his lower body. He had breaks to both of his lower legs and right ankle. He was further stabilised before being removed from the vehicle. The Medicopter flew him to a nearby hospital where he will receive treatment for his injuries.

A woman who was in the other bakkie had sustained a broken arm, and two other men had sustained minor injuries. The three patients were transported by road ambulance to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Lance now heads up the new Advanced Skills Academy which is driven towards training excellence within the advanced skills environment and we wish the best of luck at ER24.

Protect Yourself When Helping Others

One of the first things we learn when we start training to become a paramedic, is to be fully aware of any hazards that may be presented around you when approaching a patient in need of medical attention. These hazards may include anything from a seemingly vicious dog at a residential home, to a possible suspect at a crime scene.

Also included in these potential hazards, is any sort of body fluid that we may come into contact with when we are treating a patient. We therefore cannot stress enough the importance of PPE, Personal Protective Equipment.

In almost every industry, there is some form of PPE that workers are compliant with. In the construction industry, workers wear hard hats, heavy duty rescue gloves and harnesses. In the Emergency Medical Industry, latex gloves are our frontline defense against contact with possible body fluid. In certain cases protective eyewear is also used, and in other instances disposable face masks and aprons.

There are a number of diseases and viruses that are carried by not only human blood, but also saliva, sweat and excrement. PPE may assist us in preventing contraction of any of the diseases, most importantly HIV, Hepatitis and Meningitis.

We would like to make people in general aware of the possible dangers involved when assisting in patient care and treatment. It is important to realize that any assistance to a patient can be life saving, but we encourage you to be vigilant when it comes to your own safety.

Here are some tips to prevent possible exposure to someone else’s body fluids in the event that you are presented with an emergency, and are indeed willing to provide temporary care after you have called for an Ambulance:

A pair of Latex gloves may be useful to keep in your car if possible, and may be obtained from a pharmacy.

Any plastic creates a barrier, so plastic shopping bags are convenient as you can place your hands inside.

If a patient is conscious, for instance you could encourage them to hold pressure on their bleeding wound with their own hands.

Try and avoid being too close to a patients face when they are talking/coughing/sneezing. They may have a wound to their mouth and saliva/blood particles may be transmitted onto you.

If it is necessary to touch a patient, maintain a high level of awareness regarding body fluids.

When the ambulance service arrives on the scene and you are further willing to assist, ask if your assistance is necessary, and then ask if they may supply you with a pair of their latex gloves.

On behalf of ER24, we would like to thank those individuals that do offer their assistance, and we encourage further assistance in the future!

Shootout in Vanderbijlpark

A bottle store in Vanderbijlpark was allegedly robbed on Tuesday Afternoon, and the suspects almost got away.

According to ER24 paramedics, they were called to the roadside near Emerald Casino where a man had sustained a suspected gun shot wound to the back of his head. The thirty five year old man was lying in the road, complaining of severe pain to his head, but he was fully conscious and alert, even telling paramedics his name and medical history. He was lying near a Volkswagen Golf, whose windows are believed to have been shot out.

It is unclear as to who shot at the man, and it may only be a bullet fragment or a piece of shrapnel that had penetrated the mans skull and not an actual projectile.

ER24 paramedics stabilised the man on scene, administered some medication to take the edge off his pain, and transported him to a nearby State facility for further tests and evaluation. Upon handover, he was still in a stable condition although in obvious pain.

The Vanderbijlpark SAPS was also at the receiving hospital to take further statement for investigation.

Security Guard Slashed With Panga

The thirty one year old man was performing his duty on Tuesday morning as a security guard outside one of the restaurant come bar in Diepsloot Extension 1.

According to the local paramedics that received the call, a woman had allegedly attacked the man with a panga, and it is unclear as to what the connection between the man and woman is. It is also believed that there may have been an argument between the two.

The man appeared to be in severe pain, and was mildly combative, seemingly unaware of the treatment that paramedics were trying to provide to him. It was a relief though that he was still conscious and talking, even though his wounds were severe. He had sustained multiple deep cuts to his head, chest and back.

The ER24 Discovery Medicopter airlifted the patient from the Diepsloot Fire Station to a Johannesburg hospital where he will receive further treatment.

Just after 11am this morning, a call was made to ER24 national emergency number 084 124, by a man asking for help as he had just found his two year old son in the pool and unresponsive in Randfontein.

The ER24 operator took charge and explained how to do CPR over the phone while an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene. The father was told over the phone how to commence CPR who in turn relayed the information back to his wife. After a while the toddler regained a pulse and started to breathe. Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and assessed the little boy. Advanced Life Support intervention was performed on the patient before been transported to Krugersdorp Private hospital where he is being monitored by the nursing staff.

Advanced Life Support Intervention was performed on the patient while Metro Fire and Rescue used specialised equipment to stabilise the vehicle. The Jaws Of Life and other hydraulic equipment was used to extricate the patient from the vehicle. The patient who was almost entrapped for more than an hour was finally freed and had suffered a possible broken shoulder and severe pain to the right arm. Paramedics stabilised the patient before transporting him to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.

It is believed that the driver was trying to get away from the police before crashing his car into the outer perimeter wall of a block of flats, causing the car to catapult into the air and crashing into the inner wall which joins the block of flats. Behind the wall was the parking area for the residence. Another vehicle and a few windows from the ground floor block of flats were damaged in the impact. The driver has been detained by the SAPS for questioning.

It is believed that this is the second time in many months that a vehicle has crashed into this wall. The first time was a taxi accident.

Nine Meter Fall Leaves Man Injured

An employee was working on a ship in the Table Bay harbour on top of three stacked containers. The height of each of these containers is approximately three meters, making the three stacked on top of one another a height of nine meters.

It is unclear as to what happened next, but the man fell off the side of the top most container, and was found by ER24 paramedics to be almost lodged between a ledge and the side of the container on one of the narrow walkways between the containers on the ship. He seemed to be in a great deal of pain and was visibly uncomfortable although very much alert, so paramedics gave him pain medication and a mild sedative to take the edge off his pain and to relax his body.

Fire and rescue workers as well as other workers on the ship assisted paramedics with stabilising the man and loading him into a rescue basket. He was then hoisted from the ship onto the Duncan Dock by the crane used to move the containers onto the ship.

The ER24 Discovery Medicopter airlifted the man from the dock to the Life Vicent Palotti hospital to receive further appropriated medical treatment, as he had sustained multiple severe injuries. Paramedics were concerned that his blood pressure was noticeably low and they suspected he had a broken pelvis. His left elbow was also severely broken, where he had sustained a large open wound. He was complaining of severe neck pain, and had multiple cuts and bruises to his head.

Horrific Accident Kills Two

A Volkswagen Polo was allegedly travelling on the R31 approximately ten kilometers from Barkley West in the direction of Kimberly. ER24 paramedics were called to the scene of a single vehicle accident on the dark road which had occurred at around seven in the evening.

It seems that the accident had taken place about half an hour before somebody came across it and called it in, as when paramedics arrived everything appeared to be still. There were a large amount of papers scattered across the scenes, and one paramedic said that they looked like exam question papers. There were also a number of shoes that were found scattered around the scene.

Crews explained that when they arrived they saw the mangled vehicle, and began immediately assessing the five patients that were on the scene. It was extremely dark on the road, and there is dense bush and thorn trees lining either side of the single carriageway.

Two patients had sustained serious injury, and were found semi conscious next to the road. The other three were complaining of multiple pains but after assessment they were treated for minor to moderate injuries.

Police were in attendance and asked one of the lesser injured patients how many occupants there were in the vehicle. He explained that there were seven of them in the vehicle, but paramedics had only found and begun treating five.

Police rescue dogs were brought in to search for the missing two as other attempts to find them were unsuccessful. It took almost an hour before they found the boy, aged nine, stuck in a thorn tree. One of the female paramedics explained that what she saw was horrific, and she was in tears as she declared the lifeless boy, seemingly having broken most of the bones in his body. The other missing vehicle occupant was also found some time later in the dense bush, his clothes and shoes had been ripped off by the severe impact after being ejected from the vehicle. He too was declared deceased, and appeared to have no other physically obvious wounds other than a large, deep cut to his right leg. It is clear that he must have suffered massive internal injuries.

The five other men, in their twenties and early thirties were all stabilised on scene before being transported to a local hospital where they were handed over in a stable condition, and would receive further medical treatment.

At this point it is unclear as to why the vehicle went off the road and suffered such severe devastating carnage where two young people had lost their lives. Whether due to high speed, or mechanical failure of the vehicle, it would need to be investigated by the necessary authorities on the scene. It is also unclear as to whether the deceased's families have been informed of the tragedy.

Explosion At Power Station

Sulphur gas is not usually explosive, so definite investigations need to be undertaken to determine the exact cause of the explosion that occurred at the Power Station in the Vaal this afternoon.

ER24 paramedics from the Vereeniging branch responded through to a distress call by medical officials at the power station. When they arrived, they were sent to the medical station where the patients were being treated. It was said that there were nineteen people working on that specific portion of the plant, a mixture of males and females, but they had only eighteen accounted for that were injured in the explosion.

Fire services had secured the plant and they along with paramedics went into the building in search of the missing worker. He was found on the stairs, face down, close to where the leak is believed to have started and where the explosion occurred. The man of unknown age suffered severe, deep burns to the surface of his body, and he was declared deceased on the scene. Paramedics were still waiting for the mans details so as to complete the necessary paper work involved.

Four of the eighteen injured had sustained moderate burns to their hands and legs, while another one was complaining of difficulty breathing and it is suspected that he had sustained inhalation burns. The other patients were all treated for minor injuries, and all eighteen where transported to the Vereeniging Medi Clinic for further treatment.

Workers explained that they had noted that one of the pipes they call Glands had come loose, and was releasing the sulphur gas when the explosion took place.

Six Year Olds Dad Dies in Crash

According to bystanders, and Isuzu Bakkie was travelling at considerably high speed on Koeberg road at the intersection of Carson street in Durbanville. They also said that the driver seemed to be driving recklessly, and he was not keeping to his side of the single lane carriageway.

In the bakkie were five people; the male driver in his fourties, his six year old daughter who was sitting in the back under the canopy, and another three adults including one woman.

An old shape Volkswagen Beetle was travelling in the other direction when they were collided with head on by the bakkie. The Beetle was mangled, but luckily the three male occupants in their thirties were not seriously harmed. Two of them were complaining of back and neck pain, while the third explained that he was experiencing a pins and needles like sensation in his lower limbs. All three were stabilised on scene and transported to local hospitals for further treatment.

After the massive impact, the bakkie allegedly rolled, ejecting the driver through his right drivers window. As he lay on the ground with critical injuries, the bakkie come to a stop on top of him. Towing services and Fire and Rescue workers immediately began the of removing the vehicle from on top of him. Once the man was revealed, he was assessed by paramedics, and was found to have sustained multiple fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The bakkies canopy was badly deformed and came off the bakkie when it began to roll, but fortunately the six year old girl sustained no physical injuries. ER24 paramedics said that she was not crying, but her eyes showed the trauma that she had experienced. They took her to the ambulance to treat her for shock, and to prevent her from seeing her fathers' mangled body, rather awaiting a more stable environment at the hospital, and perhaps councilors to explain to her what exactly had taken place.

A woman who was also in the bakkie sustained moderate injuries, and also a large amount of skin loss to her arm. She and the two other gentlemen in the bakkie were transported to hospital.

The Durbanville SAPS will handle the investigation into the exact cause of the incident.

Almost Robbed and Hijacked at the Mall

A seemingly unsuspecting civilian was out at the Lakeside Mall in Benoni when he was approached at his vehicle by three armed men.

It is believed that the car the men were in was being looked for by the police as it had allegedly been involved in other similar crimes.

All three men looked like they were in their late twenties, and it seemed that their intention was to rob and hijack the man. When the three men approached the shopper, he pulled out a weapon he held on his person and shot at the suspects. He wounded two of them in their heads. One was fatally wounded, and he was declared deceased on the scene after it was determined that he had no signs of life. The other was in a critical condition when he was transported to the Tembisa hospital by road ambulance. The third man sustained only minor injuries, and it is believed that he was taken away in the police vehicle for questioning. The man who did the shooting fortunately was uninjured, but appeared to be extremely shaken after the traumatic incident. His fate will lie in the decision made by the Benoni CBD SAPS after investigations have taken place.

No other patrons to the mall were injured, and the scene was secured by the SAPS before ER24 paramedics arrived.

ER24 paramedics on scene arrived to find the Traffic police already in attendance, and they immediately offered help to the medics where they could. As they began to assess the scene, they noted that the passenger of the refrigerator truck was almost hanging right out of the vehicles' window, and he was unfortunately declared deceased on the scene, as his injuries were too great. The driver of the refrigerator truck was in a critical condition, he was almost lifeless, but paramedics were able to stabilise the man, taking over his vital functions manually. He was severely entrapped in the vehicle, which was mangled into the side of the sand truck. It took rescuers with heavy duty equipment almost an hour and a half to remove the wreckage so as to get the man out.

Paramedics explained that the man in his late twenties was unconscious, and had sustained what they deduced to be a severe head injury. They also treated him for chest injuries and a possible broken pelvis. The ER24 Discovery Medicopter was called out, and they were on scene waiting for the patient to be removed from the vehicle so that they could airlift him to Glynwood Hospital for immediate treatment. He was in a critical, but seemingly stable condition when he was handed over to the hospital staff. They will have the task of determining exactly how severe his injuries are.

The driver of the sand truck was fortunately unharmed but visibly shaken after the accident.

Emergency personnel gave the man medication for his pain before they stabilised his injured arm and strapped it to a splint. The damage was critical, as paramedics determined that most of the blood flow to his arm had stopped, and he could not feel it or move it. That's when they decided the best thing to do was to phone for the Medicopter.

ER24's Discovery Medicopter airlifted the thirty five year old man from the scene, and were at a state facility in Johannesburg's West Rand in less than ten minutes. He was stable en route to hospital, but paramedics said he was in a somber mood, seemingly drowsy from the pain medication. Although all attempts will be made to save the man's arm, unfortunately if the damage is too severe it may have to be amputated.
