Heavy Mist Causes Six Accidents on the R59
Heavy mist was reported this morning on the R59 between Vereeniging and Vaal Park. Six accidents are believed to have taken place, five of them minor bumper bashings with only one patient resulting, and the last one that occurred around 07H30 was severe.
A truck allegedly drove into oncoming traffic colliding head on with a VW Golf travelling in the opposite direction, with it's two male passengers on their way to work. The impact caused the truck to be severely entangled onto the Golf's bonnet, while the momentum of the truck pushed the Golf approximately thirty meters backwards.
When ER24 ambulances arrived on scene the passenger of the Golf was outside of the vehicle being treated by another service, while an ER24 Advanced Life Support paramedic was treating the driver, who is believed to be in his late twenties. He was entrapped in the driver's seat, with the dashboard pressing up against his stomach, and the truck was still ontop of the bonnet. Fire and rescue workers stabilised both vehicles with the help of towing services while paramedics treated the man. He has sustained a broken leg, arm, multiple deep cuts and scrapes, as well as suspected internal injuries and damage to his pelvic area.
It took Fire and Rescue approximately and hour and a half to cut away at both vehicle using the Jaws of Life, finally freeing the man from the wreckage. He was further stabilised by the paramedics, and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The three occupants of the truck sustained no physical injuries.
Both Traffic services and the SAPS were on the scene to take statements.
