Pietermaritzburg ( Greytown ) R74 Direction Greytown

A motor cyclist to be in his late thirty’s is a critical condition after losing control his bike and crashing into a Armco barrier on the R74 heading towards Greytown this morning.

ER24’s Advanced Life Support paramedic who was off duty at the time, witnessed the accident. The paramedic found the patient down an 30m embankment wrapped around a tree. The tree saved the man from going even further down a cliff face.

The patient had sustained multiple fractures and lacerations throughout his body. The paramedic contacted ER24 national contact number 084 124, and informed them that he had a critical patient and needed the patient to be airlifted to hospital. The Red Cross Air Mercy Helicopter was called to assist with this patient. Once the helicopter had landed the patient was stabilised further by means of Advanced Life Support intervention.

Specialised equipment was used to carry the man up the embankment onto the road side. The patient was then placed into the AMS helicopter and flown to Life Entabeni Hospital where the specialised trauma staff were waiting to take over medical care.
It is believed that the motor cyclist was on his way to the annual Mighty Men’s Conference being held in Greytown, when he lost control of the bike around the corner. No one else was injured in this accident.
