Attempted Cash In Transit Heist

An attempted cash in transit heist on the N1 North just after Rivonia was unsuccessful.

The four occupants of the vehicle, their ages ranging in their twenties to fourties, were fortunately uninjured in the incident. One of the occupants explained that they were driving towards the banks from Randburg when a number of vehicles approached the transit van. The then started shooting at the vehicle and forced them to pull over on the side of the highway. An unknown number of suspects approached the vehicle, attempting to force the occupants to open the rear compartment where the money is kept.

The suspects were unable to open the rear door and police had been alerted by the van's escort. As police approached the scene, the suspects fled in a number of vehicles, abandoning one vehicle that was allegedly hijacked last month in another province.

The four occupants were assessed by ER24 paramedics, and were visibly shaken, but they refused transportation to hospital. They will however, receive trauma counseling relating to the incident.

Investigations will be further handled by the SAPS.
