Tanker Explodes After Head On Collision

There was a report of a major incident this morning when a fuel tanker and another truck collided on the N3 westbound just after the Marrianhill Toll Plaza. After the impact of the accident the fuel tanker exploded, igniting the other truck and another vehicle in the vicinity.

The driver of the fuel tanker died in the incident whilst the driver of the other truck was in a critical condition on the scene. He was stabilised by paramedics and flown by helicopter to a nearby Durban hospital. It is still unclear what the involvement of the other vehicles were as the fire and emergency services are still trying to clear the scene.

The ER24 Discovery Medicopter was circling the scene shortly after the accident and whilst delivering updates and traffic alerts to the relevant news authorities also provided updates to the emergency services regarding the incident.

This accident has caused major traffic disturbances along the N3, closing the freeway for westbound traffic. This caused a major backlog of traffic along the N3 as well as the M13 freeway.

It is still unclear what the cause of the accident was but the relevant authorities will be investigating the incident.
