The incident occurred in Die Boord, Stellenbosch, at around 10 am this morning. A 54 year old man was allegedly trimming his hedges at his private residence while standing on a 2 meter high ladder.
The man allegedly lost his balance and fell off the ladder. He landed with the 30 centimeter long pruning shears impaled into the left side of his chest, just below his collar bone.
As ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found that the shears had been removed from the man's chest, he was unresponsive, and he had lost alot of blood. They immediately started CPR, and Advanced Life Support intervention was initiated.
Despite all efforts to resuscitate the man, attempts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
The Stellenbosch SAPS were on scene and will handle the necessary investigation.
