Paramedics were left fearing for their lives last night when they were threatened and chased by members of the community in Diepsloot.
Shortly after 00:30 this morning, paramedics received an emergency call for a patient that apparently had a medical emergency. When paramedics arrived a few blocks away from the scene the ambulance was blocked with people closing the road.
Paramedics questioned the situation and a man that was stabbed in the face was brought to the ambulance. The man was in a serious condition and had to be transported quickly to a hospital for further medical care.
Community members blocked the ambulance and started to open the doors of the vehicle as the ambulance tried to depart the scene. According to the paramedics on the scene, people tried to grab the patient from the ambulance and questioned why the paramedics treated the man. The crowd started to become more hostile towards the paramedics.
The medical team managed to flee the scene with the patient in the back. Shortly after they left Diepsloot a vehicle started chasing them down the R511 towards Fourways. Paramedics explained that the vehicle with an unknown amount of occupants sped past the ambulance and drove in front of it. A few moments later the vehicle pulled over and started chasing the ambulance from behind again.
Worried paramedics started increasing their speed and utilized sirens to get away from the vehicle. The vehicle chasing the ambulance apparently pulled over a few blocks away from the hospital.
