Two people were killed this morning and another two were left in a critical condition near Grassmere Toll plaza when a truck and a car collided head on with each other.
Shortly before 07:30 paramedics arrived on a chaotic scene on the N1 about four kilometers after the toll plaza, and found a truck lying on its side with a severely mangled car on the other.
Paramedics quickly learned that the driver and the front passenger of the car sustained multiple fatal injuries. On further assessment paramedics found a man and a women in the back of the vehicle. Both of them were in a critical condition and had to be transported to a nearby hospital for further medical management.
It is understood from bystanders on the scene that the truck was traveling towards Johannesburg when it apparently lost control and veered across the middle island into oncoming traffic.
The highway had to be closed off in the direction of Van der Bijl Park and traffic is re-routed through the middle island of the highway.
The driver of the truck was also assessed on the scene. He sustained moderate injuries during the collision.
The exact cause for this accident is not yet known and will be investigated.
