It seems that initially a single car, crashed into one of the highway bridge pillars a the N1 N4 interchange in Pretoria. According to bystanders, the Opel was a complete wreck, and it seemed that it had burst open after the impact, coming to rest in pieces in the middle of the highway. The male driver of the Opel was deceased having suffered multiple severe fatal injuries.
Not long after the first accident, a taxi drove straight into the front wreckage of the Opel, but fortunately the driver remained in control of the vehicle and managed to maneuver it onto the side of the middle island. The patrons got out of the taxi to inspect the damage and decide what they were going to do next. A few helpful passersby stopped at the now two car wreck to see if they could lend a helping hand.
Unbelievable as it may seem, a Mercedes Benz then came along and crashed into the back of the taxi parked on the side of the road. One of the patients transported by ER24 paramedics said that one minute she was standing near the taxi waiting for help, and the next she was lying a few meters away with her face up against the side of the taxi. She has recently found out that she is pregnant, and she was transported to a local hospital in a critical but stable state with multiple broken bones to her legs.
Eight other patients were also transported from the scene with multiple, moderate to minor injuries.
The highway remained closed due to clean up operations.
