Safety With Regards To Gas Bottles In The Home

Following the events that occurred on Monday evening in Glen Marais in Kempton Park Johannesburg, where ER24 paramedics responded to a call where two elderly people sustained injury due to a faulty gas heater in their home. L.P Gas Safety Associates as well as ER24 have determined the need to educate home owners of the safety aspects and precautions that need to be undertaken when dealing with gas bottles and cylinders being used in the home.

L.P Gas Safety Associates have a Customer Care Line, which individuals can phone with queries relating to their personal use gas bottles, 086 01 02 003 can be contacted Monday - Friday, 08:-00 - 16:00.

The following are a few safety tips that should be considered EVERY time a standard home gas bottles of 9 kilograms or more is used.

1. Take note of, and follow the instructions on the tag that is attached to the gas appliance for correct assembly of the gas bottle to the appliance.

2. Make sure that the gas bottle regulator is securely attached to the appliance inlet. If the appliance has not been in use for some time, remove the regulator, check that the rubber seal is indeed in place and in good working order, and reconnect as per instruction.

3. Check the rubber seal on the regulator frequently, as it may have been accidentally removed or is disintegrated. It is absolutely imperative that a good seal is maintained between the gas and appliance inlet.

4. Use a REPUTABLE dealer when buying or refilling gas bottles.

5. If an appliance is to be installed, make sure that the installer is qualified and registered. Also only use tested and approved appliances. A full list of qualified installers and approved appliances is available on www.lpgas.co.za.
