Car Accident Kills One

The driver of a refrigerator truck tells the story with a hint of breathlessness as he relays the events that left a man dead on the R559 Zuurbekoms road near Mohlakeng in Randfontein.

He explained that he was travelling down the road, away from Randfontein, when he saw a car pulling out into the road from the Toekomsrus suburb. Unfortunately he was unable to stop his heavy vehicle, and crashed into the driver's side of the Mercedes Benz sedan. The sedan was pushed a few meters by the truck, ripping off the trucks front bulbar and partly ripping off the side of the Mercedes' door.

When paramedics arrived the pieces were still lying on the side of the road, grossly entangled.

Provincial services were on scene first, assessing the other three patients that were in the sedan. ER24 paramedics assisted them where necessary, and assessed the sedan driver who was still sitting in the front driver's seat of the vehicle. Due to the pure impact of the truck into his side of the car, he sustained multiple injuries, and was unfortunately pronounced deceased on the scene. Fire and rescue workers had to use the Jaws of Life to removed the man's body from the wreckage. He was only fourty four years old.

The three other occupants, two men and a woman, who were also in the sedan at the time of impact, sustained moderate to serious injuries, and were all assess and stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.

The driver and passenger of the refrigerator truck were left physically unharmed, but still seemed in awe that this tragedy had occurred.

The Randfontein SAP were on scene to obtain the necessary statements for investigations.
