A collision has left two dead, two critical and four serious after a light motor vehicle crashed into the back of a bakkie on the R617 near Merrivale in the early hours of this morning.
ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find eight patients lying across the road near the cars. Two patients both males had sustained fatal injuries. Two others had sustained critical injuries of which one had sustained a head injury and fifty percent burns. Advanced life support intervention had to be performed on the patient. Four other patients had sustained severe fractures to their extremities. All patients were stabilised and transported to various hospitals in the greater Pietermaritzburg area for further medical care.
It is believed that the light motor vehicle slammed into the back of the bakkie and caught a light on impact. It is unclear how the patients got out of the vehicle but the necessary authorities were on the scene and would be investigating the accident.
