Patient Steals Ambulance

Paramedics from Vereeniging were stunned this morning when they returned to an empty parking space outside the Kopanong Hospital where they expected to see their ambulance.

Shortly before 04:00 this morning, paramedics from ER24 attended a motorbike accident in Meyerton. A man sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Kopanong Hospital for further medical management.

The two paramedics parked in the emergency ambulance parking and took the patient into the casualty.

The paramedics explained that they returned after approximately 20 minutes and found an empty parking bay.

One of the paramedics stormed back into the casualty and confronted the security guard. The security guard apparently explained that he saw a man with a bandage around his head leaving the casualty and climbed into the ambulance. According to the paramedics on the scene, the security guard said that the man stated he would want to go home and cannot afford a taxi.

More strange to the situation is that the security apparently opened the gate for the man to leave with the ambulance.

Paramedics immediately alerted the ER24 Emergency Contact Centre to initialise tracking on the ambulance. Hospital staff at Kopanong identified the man who apparently stole the ambulance and gave paramedics and police the address.

Tracking confirmed the address and paramedics and police raced to the location.

The two paramedics explained that when they entered the suburb of Springcole, approximately five kilometers from the hospital, they found the ambulance still idling and with its lights on in front of a house. Paramedics confirmed that all the equipment was still in the vehicle and nothing appeared to be missing.

Police tried to investigate if the man was in the house, but no one answered the door.

A case was registered with the Police for further investigation and the ambulance was returned to its crew to continue their duties.
