Two adults and two children have been injured after a head on collision between a bakkie and a light motor vehicle at the intersection of French and Topham road in Pietermaritzburg this morning.
ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find both vehicles in the middle of the road, completely closing the road off to traffic. The driver who was still found in the bakkie had sustained serious neck and back injuries and needed specialised equipment to help protect her back and neck.
A nine year old boy was found outside the light motor vehicle and been held by his sister who is twelve. The driver who is there mother was entrapped in the driver’s seat. The boy had sustained serious head injuries, while his sister sustained neck and back injuries. The mother was extricated from the vehicle using specialised hydraulic equipment from the Fire Department. The driver had sustained neck and back injuries and needed advanced life support intervention.
All patients were transported to Pietermaritzburg Medi-Clinic in a serious but stable condition for further medical care.
It is unclear who was at fault but the necessary authorities were on the scene and would investigate the accident further.
