Shortly after 17:00 this evening paramedics received a distress call for a person that was shot in Three Rivers, Vereeniging.
When paramedics arrived on the scene they found a horrific incident with traumatised family members gathering around the body of a four year old boy. Paramedics quickly entered the scene and assessed the little boy.
Paramedics quickly learned that the boy sustained a gunshot wound to his head and had no signs of life. There was nothing that paramedics could do for the boy and he was declared dead on the scene.
Members of the community that gathered on the scene explained to paramedics and police that the two boys were apparently playing with a firearm when the incident occurred. It was at this moment that family members pointed paramedics in the direction of a severely traumatised ten year old standing near the scene.
The ten year old boy was apparently present when the incident took place and received treatment for shock on the scene.
It is understood that the boys were playing outside their house on a plot when the incident occurred.
It is not clear where the boys found the firearm. The police attended the scene and will conduct an investigation.
Trauma counseling was also offered by paramedics on the scene.
