FOURWAYS [ Johannesburg North ] Witkoppen and William Nicol Drives on 23 August 2009 at 14:00

Paramedics attended to yet another serious taxi accident this afternoon where at least three people were left in a serious condition and 12 others with multiple injuries.

Shortly after 14:00 paramedics attended to the incident on Witkoppen Bridge in Fourways where they found a taxi with people scattered around it. Paramedics from ER24, Life Fourways and the Johannesburg Fire Department had to join forces to treat and stabilize the injured.

According to eyewitnesses on the scene the taxi was travelling on William Nicol drive when it appeared that it could not stop. One of the witnesses explained the taxi then took the slipway onto Witkoppen Bridge and collided side on with a car travelling towards Douglasdale.

The taxi apparently overturned several times and all of the occupants were flung from the taxi. Some of the passengers were found underneath the taxi.

A heavily pregnant lady was found near the taxi with multiple injuries. Most of the passengers and the driver of the taxi sustained serious injuries.

A passenger in the light motor vehicle also sustained serious injuries.

This incident occurred only a few hours after an earlier taxi accident on the M1 near the Woodmead Interchange where at least one person was killed and almost 14 others were injured.

The Metro Police attended the incident.
