Pietermaritzburg ( Nottingham Road ) N3 South Bound near Nottingham road at 09H15 on the 7 September 09

A family of five have been involved in a collision after the car they were travelling in lost control and collided into a tree this morning. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find all five occupants had been ejected from the vehicle and were lying around the vehicle. two patients were in a critical condition of which was a five year old child.
Advanced Life Support intervention was preformed on both patients but sadly paramedics were unable to save the man's life as he had suffered traumatic injuries. The 5yr was airlifted by the Red Cross Air Mercy Helicopter to Greys hospital in a critical condition. The remaining three patients were treated for serious injuries and were transported by road to a near by hospital for further treatment.
It is believed that the family of five from Lesotho were driving down the N3, when their light motor vehicle may have had mechanical problems. The vehicle left the road and collided into the tree. It is also lead to believe that the patient that died on the scene is the father of the young child and was also a Doctor. RTI will be investigating the accident.
