1 Dead, 1 Airlifted and 16 Others Injured in Taxi Accident

A man has died and another sustained critical injuries after a head on collision on the R511 near the Indaba Hotel this morning.

Paramedics from ER24 and Life Fourways arrived on the scene shortly after 06:00 and found two taxis that collided head on with each other.

On further assessment paramedics found one man, believed to be the taxi driver, that sustained critical injuries. He had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital for further medical management. 16 Other patients were found scattered around the taxis. Most of them sustained moderate injuries.

One man was found dead on the scene. It is understood that he was the driver of the other taxi.

Bystanders explained that one of the taxi tried to overtake when it collided head on with oncoming traffic.

The R511 between Indaba Hotel and Uranium Street had to be closed off for traffic whilst the air ambulance landed on the scene.

The Johannesburg Metro Police attended the scene and will conduct an investigation
