Pietermaritzburg ( Central ) Pietermaritzburg Train Station at 05H00 on the 3 November 09

A Train driver and assistant has been left in a serious condition after the train they were travelling in had derailed at the Pietermaritzburg train station. The incident took place just after 5am this morning. Three locomotives were found lying on their side about 200m past the train station.

The patients were found some distance from the front locomotive and it is unclear if they were flung from the derailing train. Both patients had sustained multiple injuries and was stabilised on the scene by ER24 Advanced Life Support paramedics before they were transported to Pietermaritzburg Medi-Clinic. They are in a serious but stable condition.

It is believed that the three locomotives were transporting maize in multiple containers at the time of the incident. It is still unclear what had caused the derailment but the relevant local authorities are on scene to conduct a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

The derailment has caused the train station to be closed until further notice.
