Cape Town [Bellville] N1 on 02 November 2009 at 11h30

Two people were injured when a bakkie rolled on the N1 between Durban Road and Old Oak Road in Bellville. The two people from the bakkie were taken to Louis Leipoldt Medi-Clinic in a moderate condition for further treatment.

Emergency services that arrived on the scene were told that the bakkie, which was lying on its side in the centre island, was carrying hazardous material. The necessary precautions were taken by the Hazmat crews from the Fire Department, which resulted in the N1 being closed in both directions until the exact extent of the contamination of the substance could be determined.

Officials from the Cape Town Health and Safety Department were called in and used specialised monitoring equipment to determine what the exact contamination levels were. Emergency service personnel and vehicles were also tested for any contamination levels but were declared safe. The scene was cleared up by the necessary authorities.

Road closures led to a massive back up in traffic and severely hampered travelling time in and out of the city.
