Mid morning traffic was severely affected at the intersection of the M7 and N2, involving two trucks and five cars.
It is alleged that the driver of a dry bulk haulage truck suffered mechanical failure whilst travelling down the M7. The failure led to the driver been able to stop his vehicle as it careened through the intersection causing wide spread damage until it came to rest in oncoming traffic and burst into flames. Wreckage from the accident was strewn across all four lanes of the east bound carriage way of the M7.
The accident resulted in a Reclamation group truck loaded with a skiff full of scrap metal over turning and blocking the off ramp of the N2. The majority of the cars were hit whilst turning onto the on ramp for the N2. An elderly woman who's vehicle was struck from behind was treated for serious injuries. The driver of the over turned truck sustained injuries to his head. Three other patients were treated for moderate injuries. The driver of the out of controlled truck managed to escape the fire that ravaged the cabin of his truck with out any injuries.
Emergency services where quick to respond and had the fire doused with in minutes, limiting the damage to only the horse. The patients were transported to hospitals in the greater Durban areas for further medical treatment. Metro police, Fire Department, EMRS and RTI were in attendance.
