Montrose (Pietermaritzburg) N3 Peter Brown offramp (S) 13 November 2009 - 14h30

A petrol tanker has gone down the embankment and overturned on the Peter Brown offramp in Pietermaritzburg. The tanker was carrying large amounts of petrol and diesel when the driver alledgedly couldn't stop at the top of the offramp and broke through the armco barrier.

The truck then overturned as it went down the bank. The driver had managed to free himself from the truck and was found by ER24 paramedics on the top near the road surface. He was stabilized and transported to Pietermaritzburg Medi-clinic by ER24 paramedics for further management of his injuries.

He is currently in a stable condition at Pietermaritzburg Medi-clinic. Fire Emergency and Rescue Services had taken control of the scene. Foam had been placed over the truck and the possible spillage area in order to minimise the possibility of a fire and are thus taking precautions to prevent a possible spillage.

The truck is lying approximately ten metres down the embankment and on its side. Road traffic Inspectorate officers closed the access for all traffic to the to the scene including the Peter Brown offramp in order to secure the scene.

SAPS collision unit will be invesigating the incident.
